The Dark Side of Twitter : A small snippet

The other day, a Twitter user observed that the main reason why people seemed to like Twitter as a social platform over, say, Instagram, or Facebook, was that it allowed for millions to be miserable together. It’s not hard to agree. It’s hard seeing friends and family having a good time (purportedly), while you feel left out. Perhaps you feel glum, even bitter, that you have nothing nice to share. You then turn to a different platform. Where people are anonymous. Where no one knows you (at least, in real life). It’s not hard to crib and complain here. No one’s here to judge you. They’ll commiserate, be full of sympathy, speak words of comfort. It is intoxicating, this new drug. You feel awful about your life? You tweet about it. You get likes, retweets— people agree with you! It feels right. Everyone is miserable here. You’re not feeling left out; you’re a part of something now. Miserable people are finally sexy. You’re attracted to other miserables. You make friends with them You talk of your miseries. You take great pleasure in discussing your pain. You finally feel understood. But it’s…difficult, after a time. You tire of your miserable friends. They tire of you. Being miserable was never attractive. It was simply your loneliness. It was unhealthy.
